Success after failure

After not being able to reach to the summit of Mount K2, Greg Mortenson is pulled back, welcomed and sheltered by the nearby villagers of Korphe. During his stay for seven weeks, he observed the condition of the villagers. Besides poverty, he encountered many aspects about the villagers that made him do something for them. The major factor that led him to take some initials to help the villager was he wanted to bring education on that village. There he saw many young girls who were interested in learning and so he thought this would not only help them but the villagers would benefit as well. So he went back to United States and thought of building a project where he could contribute something towards to villagers of Korphe. There he gathered funds and some technologies in order to build schools for children of Pakistan and Afghanistan. He came back and built many schools for them. He devoted his time understanding the people and educating the young girls.

This is one of the moments where I found that had an important insight in Three Cups of Tea. Personally I found that Greg Mortenson wanted to bring a change in the village and the villagers so he did something humanitarian a social cause to the people out there. When he was not able to climb Mt. K2, he could have just gone back to his country and carried on his life but he had different things in his minds and helped the villagers for a noble cause. This was one of the most beautiful aspects of the book. Not even caring for his own family, he used to stay and help the villagers for the whole half of the year.

Talking about my experience in Global Beginnings, I did go through a lot of situations where I had to make choices and these choices have a positive and a negative impact. The first ten days in Paris was something which everyone would not even think of doing. Instead of getting to know about the French culture and people, I was so lazy to go out. In a sense, I was not at all interested in the learning about the French culture. As we began to experience many things about the French culture, I found many difficulties whether it is the language or the understanding about their culture. This made me feel completely left out and thus slowly and steadily, I started to socialize with the French people showing a keen interest in their language and culture. During this period of time, I encountered various aspects about their culture which not only broadened my knowledge of understanding but has helped me to connect it with my daily life as well. There after I have started to respect and appreciate different cultures.

A Gobal Lesson

"Three Cups of Tea is" one of the most remarkable adventure stories where Greg Mortenson went through dangerous and difficult situations and had a mission to build schools in the wildest parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan. During this period of time, he encounters many difficulties to promote literacy and education for girls in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. His main focus was to educate the girls in order to promote the equality among the gender within the society. He believed that if girls were educated then it would help to decrease the birth rate, infant immortality and poverty as well. His major effort was to fight terrorism and promote peace. During his mission, he faced several difficulties; he was kidnapped in Pakistan and escaped a firefight between Afghan and the war people and he was criticized by many people who were against the Muslims. But in the end he succeeded in his mission to establish schools and educate the children in the villages. For his humanitarian efforts he was awarded and well appreciated by the people throughout the world.

It is obvious that this adventure of Greg Mortenson is not an easy route to lead one’s life for the sake of others. Likewise Greg Mortenson, a commitment to serve others has always been on the forefront. As a young Christian student, I have always been engrossed in helping my community. We were taught to serve mankind. My involvement in community service has always meant a lot to me. It brings a feeling of satisfaction to help people in need. I am committed to assisting others and being part of a cause which drives me in my personal philosophy of life.

As for now, Global Beginnings has not only helped me to become who I am but also has taught me different aspects about life. These aspects are concerned with the culture around me. It has helped me not only to experience the cultures and lifestyles of different people but develop ideas on how I can contribute something for the people around me. Now, I see myself as a person who is willing to lend a hand to contribute something to the society where I become a part of it. One aspect that I have learned from Greg Mortenson experience is that one must respect and appreciate each other’s culture in order to bring peace and harmony thus during my stay in Global Beginnings, I am here to push myself further to gain a wide range of knowledge from the European culture and implying that knowledge in my daily life. With some dedication and determination we can all contribute and change the world in which we live.
